Tea & Poetry

T&P 2019 SFM Amy and Owen Tea and Poetry-blending.jpg

Months back, we asked: “Will Tea & Poetry be canceled due to the endless coronavirus crisis? Will it go online instead? Or will We the People make it happen with proper social distancing?”

The answer is: no. Tea & Poetry was cancelled, and the New Oregon nonprofit is shutting down. We may still try to do some kind of Zoom-based event…

Winter Solstice Gathering ~ Silent Meditation & Labyrinth Walk

4:30 pm at Sisters Community Labyrinth, East Portal, Sisters, OR

Winter Solstice Gathering with Silent Meditation Labyrinth Walk

People from all spiritual traditions and walks of life are invited to join in. The group asks that participants dress warmly, bring a flashlight, and optionally bring small battery-operated candles to help light the labyrinth paths. A warm beverage in a well-insulated vessel is a good idea, too.

A ceremonial circle starts at 4:30 pm, and walking begins at 4:45. Afterward, folks are welcome to sip their drinks around the fire. Sisters Community Labyrinth gatherings are typically 45-60 minutes long.

FAMILIES

Silent meditations are difficult to manage with young children in tow. Any families wishing to take part may contact New Oregon Arts and Letters by December 20. Email is preferred, to neworegonarts@gmail.com. Phoning is an option as well: (503) 997-0301. A separate, special walk will be scheduled earlier in the day for families if there is a need.

LOCATION

The labyrinth is located in East Portal on West Hood Avenue. East Portal is the US Forest Service site where Highway 20 and Highway 242 meet, roughly between BiMart and Les Schwab. This park-like area is generally closed and gated off in winter. Gates will be open for this Solstice event. For updates on restrooms and parking, please visit the event webpage at www.neworegon.org/events/wintersolstice2019 .

Tea & Poetry

Tea & Poetry to light up Sisters Farmers Market on Sunday, September 22

Care to blend your own herbal teas while your kids play poetry games? Join a free creativity workshop after shopping for super-fresh local veggies? Taste-test some chai? If yes: come on down to Tea & Poetry at Sisters Farmers Market on Sunday, September 22.

Krayna Castelbaum has led "poetry playshops" in Bend every month for the last eight years. "People come because whether you're a fledgling or an experienced person with the creative process — it's for anybody," she said. A transformational coach and "creative instigator," she encourages everyone, including non-writers, to play for its own sake.

"If you're pulling up a vegetable from the ground, there's the roots, there's all the dirt hanging off the roots," she explained in a metaphor. The writing that emerges in a playshop is "your first impulse. Maybe it is finished, but it's not a product." Poignant, authentic writing often emerges.

Castelbaum will lead a free playshop at 11:30 a.m. at Tea & Poetry this Sunday, September 22 at Fir Street Park in Sisters, during the farmers market. Other activities include a Deschutes Public Library poetry booth for kids, a haiku contest for all ages, and performances by Sisters Ukulele Group. Tea & Poetry is co-presented by New Oregon Arts & Letters and Sisters Farmers Market.

Blend Your Own Herbal Teas

Mountain Rose Herbs donated materials so that market-goers can mix up their own herbal tea blends to take home and enjoy over the long winter. During their tea blending experience, participants are encouraged to share or listen to poetry that moves them. The activity was inspired by Sisters resident Katie Diez and will take place on the Songbird Stage.

Food & Farms Haiku Contest

The State of Oregon's official poet laureate, Kim Stafford, will judge the Food & Farms haiku contest. Prizes for contests include gift certificates to Bedouin clothing store, Suttle Tea teahouse, Jackson's Corner restaurant, Metolius Artisan Teas, Paulina Springs Books, and microlocal farms Seed to Table and Mahonia Gardens. Winning haiku will also be published in The Nugget Newspaper.

Those wishing to enter the contest in person should drop by Paulina Springs Books by 2 p.m. September 18. Out-of-town folks can enter the contest online for a small fee, using the URL http://tinyurl.com/foodhaiku-submittable. Last-minute entries for additional prizes (with a different judge) will be accepted in person at the farmers market on Tea & Poetry day, September 22.

Through the Very End of September

Sisters Farmers Market runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday through the end of September at Fir Street Park. The park is located one block north of Cascade Ave./Highway 20 at the corner of E. Main and N. Fir St.

Handcrafted goods, wood-fired roasted coffee, and microlocal produce grown just blocks away are among the products on offer at the market. Look out for lunch, lemonade, and raw vegan desserts, among other treats. Kids' activities are featured every week, along with music and workshops for all ages. Kids also enjoy the park's splash pad fountains on hot days.

Special Programs

Special programs like Tea & Poetry are funded in part by grants from the City of Sisters and the Roundhouse Foundation. Many thanks to them!

In-kind donations from Xpress Printing, The Nugget Newspaper, and the design and branding firm Plazm helped turn the market around this year, moving to a successful new day and time. Sponsorships from Cottonwood Cafe, Metabolic Maintenance, She Soars Psychiatry, and Jane McGowan nonprofit counseling help fuel the market, along with community volunteers.

New Oregon Arts & Letters, the event's co-presenter, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2001 in Portland, Oregon. Sisters Farmers Market is a nonprofit entity operating under the fiscal sponsorship of SPRD, Sisters Parks and Recreation District. Find the presenters online at neworegon.org and sistersfarmersmarket.com.

Food & Farms Haiku Contest with Oregon's Poet Laureate

Food & Farms Haiku Contest with Oregon's Poet Laureate

Oregon's Poet Laureate to judge local Food & Farm Haiku contest

What's small, mysterious, and bursting with flavor? A truffle, perhaps. A perfectly ripe raspberry. Or a tiny poem about delicious local foods. The State of Oregon's official Poet Laureate, Kim Stafford, has signed on as the judge for the Food & Farm Haiku contest. It’s part of the special Tea & Poetry event on September 22 at Sisters Farmers Market, co-presented by New Oregon Arts & Letters.

"Small, dusky, and mysterious, a haiku passes before you like a bat, sweeping away the mosquitos of annoyance, and startling you awake to the magic of the moment," said Stafford. A poet, educator, and delightful storyteller, Stafford has roots in the Sisters area. When he was young, his family—including his father, poet William Stafford—built their own cabin near town.

You don't have to be a poet to dream up a short poem and enter the contest. All ages are welcome to jump on in and try. Prizes include gift certificates to Metolius Tea, Jackson's Corner restaurant, Mahonia Gardens farm, Paulina Springs Books, Suttle Tea teahouse, Seed to Table education farm, and Bedouin clothing store and cafe.

Winning haiku will also be published in The Nugget Newspaper, media sponsor of Sisters Farmers Market.

"We invite you to celebrate the seasons and really sink into your senses," said Tea & Poetry organizer T. Lee Brown. "Write about food, farms, or tea. Think about how foods smell, look, and taste, what they feel like rolling around in your mouth, what memories they invoke."

Entrants may use the popular American style of writing haiku: a three-line poem featuring a 5-7-5 syllable structure. Alternately, they may choose to write in the Japanese tradition, focusing on how their words and imagery evoke the seasons rather than counting syllables.

With help from Aude Girin, Seed to Table's education coordinator, Brown led the audience at a recent Sisters Farmers Market talent show in a group tasting and writing exercise. An example:

Crisp green cucumber

Rests beside a bursting peach—

Harvest time is near.

Food & Farm Haiku contest entries may be dropped off at Paulina Springs Books or Sisters Farmers Market. Locals can also email their haiku. Non-locals can submit electronically via Submittable.com for a small fee. Details can be found online at http://tinyurl.com/foodhaiku.

Sisters Farmers Market is open through the end of September, on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. At Fir Street Park, one block north of Cascade Ave/Hwy 20. Co-presented by New Oregon Arts & Letters, Tea & Poetry is funded in part by grants from the Roundhouse Foundation and the City of Sisters.
